Forklift Training, Licence & Certification — What’s the Difference?
People often use “forklift licence” or Lesen Forklift when searching for forklift operator training in Malaysia. However, training, competency certification and employer authorisation are not necessarily the same thing.
|
Term |
What it generally refers to |
|---|---|
|
Forklift Training |
Learning how to operate and handle a forklift safely |
|
Forklift Certification |
Documentation showing that the participant has completed the relevant training / assessment, depending on the programme |
|
Forklift Licence / License |
A common term used by people searching for forklift operator training and authorisation |
For workplace operations, employers should ensure that operators receive appropriate training, are competent for the work involved and are properly authorised according to the applicable workplace requirements.
Important: What Does “Forklift Licence” Mean?
The term “forklift licence” or “forklift license” is widely used when people search for forklift operator training in Malaysia. However, it should not automatically be treated as the name of a single government-issued licence applicable to every forklift operator.
LSPA provides forklift training and relevant training / competency certification. We do not issue or provide a government-issued forklift driving licence (“lesen forklift”).
If you require information about a driving licence, licence class or any licence issued by JPJ, please check directly with Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) for the applicable requirements. JPJ provides official information on driving licence applications and licence classes through its offices and official channels.
For workplace forklift operation, employers should also ensure that operators receive appropriate training, are competent and are properly authorised for the relevant equipment and workplace requirements.
What Should a Forklift Operator Be Trained To Do?
Forklift training should go beyond simply learning how to drive the machine.
Training may include:
- Safe operation of the forklift
- Pre-use inspection
- Load handling
- Stability and operating principles
- Safe travel and manoeuvring
- Workplace hazards
- Pedestrian safety
- Loading and unloading
- Safe parking and shutdown
- Practical operation and assessment
The training required should also take into account the type of forklift, attachments, workplace and actual job responsibilities.
How to Get a Forklift Certification in Malaysia?
When people search for “how to get a forklift licence in Malaysia”, they are usually looking for the training and competency process required before operating a forklift at work.
A practical approach is:
1. Attend Appropriate Forklift Training
Choose training suitable for the type of forklift and work involved.
2. Complete the Required Practical Training
Participants should have the opportunity to practise safe forklift operation under appropriate supervision.
3. Complete the Assessment
The assessment should establish whether the participant has demonstrated the required knowledge and practical skills for the programme.
4. Obtain the Relevant Training / Competency Documentation
The document issued depends on the training programme and provider.
5. Employer Authorisation
The employer should ensure that only appropriately trained and competent employees are authorised to operate the relevant forklift at the workplace.
For specific workplace or regulatory requirements, employers should verify the current requirements applicable to their operation.
How Much Does a Forklift Licence / Training Cost in Malaysia?
There is no single price for every forklift training or “forklift licence” arrangement.
Cost can depend on:
Training programme • Number of participants • Location • Forklift type • Practical requirements • Public or in-house training
For companies arranging group training, an in-house forklift training programme may be more suitable.
Can Forklift Training Be Claimed Under HRD Corp?
Eligible employers may apply for funding under the HRD Corp Claimable Courses programme, subject to the current HRD Corp requirements and approval.
HRD Corp states that the programme supports eligible in-house and public training, with a minimum training duration of 4 hours. The application is submitted through e-TRiS and supporting documents include the quotation/invoice, training schedule/course content and trainer profile. Forklift Training vs Forklift Licence: What Does My Company Actually Need?
For most employers, the important question is not simply:
“Where can I get a forklift licence?”
A better question is:
“Are our forklift operators properly trained, competent and authorised to operate the relevant equipment safely?”
The exact requirements can depend on the workplace, equipment and applicable regulations or company procedures.
For specific legal or regulatory questions, employers should verify the current requirements with the relevant authority.
